5 Atmospheric Steam Deck Games for the Rainy Season

Rainy season putting a halt on those outdoor plans? For us, this is often a great time to lie in bed and play some video games. Fortunately, consoles like the Steam Deck have made it possible to play our personal libraries from the comforts of our bed and even while out traveling!

Given that it’s the rainy season though, we’re personally in the mood for some atmospheric games either to contrast or accent the current season. With that said, here are some of our favorite atmospheric games for the Steam Deck:

Elden Ring

Launched to critical acclaim back in 2022, From Software’s Elden Ring remains a gorgeous addition to your Steam Deck library this rainy season! You get a big open world, an intriguing narrative, hard challenges, and a vast array of character customization options that helps make the journey feel entirely your own.

The company is also able to implement their design chops to a bigger open world too. Each environment within the Lands Between provides their own unique atmosphere, whether it’s the moonlit waters of Rennala’s arena or the infernal palace of Mohg, Lord of Blood.

It’s definitely a game you can play for hours, just exploring and testing your mettle against its challenges. Do note that you might want to get a higher capacity Steam Deck for it though, since its install size of around 49 GB won’t fit on the base 64 GB model without a card.

Alternatively, you might want to extend your exploration of the Lands Between during trips. In that case, the Steam Deck is also compatible with heavy-duty power banks, like the Jaguar Laptop power bank, helping extend your play time!

Stardew Valley

Home ownership and a thriving business…ain’t that the dream? Well, you can experience a bite-sized version of it with Stardew Valley! Here, you’re placed in charge of a farm left by your grandfather, giving you free reign to do whatever you want to achieve your vision of success.

It’s a more laid-back experience than our previous entry but you do experience your own set of challenges too. After all, you have to balance your farm work and your social life with what limited time and stamina you have. Running a farm is hard work after all!

Nonetheless, it does allow you to take your own time creating your own story and definition of success, which is just perfect for these slow rainy seasons. It’s just a very comfortable game to play even while curled up in the bed or couch, listening to the raindrops on the windowsill.

And in case you don’t have a Steam Deck but have an Android phone? You can get the game there at an affordable price too! We definitely recommend giving it a try regardless of platform!

Firewatch

Firewatch places you in the shoes of fire lookout Henry at the beautiful Shoshone National Forest. Possessing just your wits and a voice on the other end of a radio acting as your emotional lifeline, you must get to the bottom of an old mystery that lies hidden within the beautiful, picturesque landscape of the park.

The game possesses a stellar art direction that really captures the natural beauty of the park. Sunsets look incredibly vibrant, casting all manner of lights and shadows around the landscape. On the other hand, the story and acting is also quite intriguing and it’s fun watching how your choices affect the mystery unfolding before you.

It’s definitely a great, atmospheric walking simulator to remind us of sunnier days while the rain falls outside.

Inside

Playdead’s Inside is another atmospheric entry that definitely leans more into the feelings of unease and isolation as you take control of a boy navigating a hostile environment of the world as you try and uncover the mystery at the center of its story.

There’s a nice feeling of dread as you navigate deathly quiet hallways and corridors suddenly brimming to life as a new organic or mechanical threat starts bumping in the night. You also get your fair share of puzzles to solve which tests how well you can navigate this side-scrolling adventure.

It’s not a particularly long game, which is great for those wanting shorter experiences. It’s not a very heavy nor expensive game as well, which makes for a great addition to the base model Steam Deck. Oh, but try and keep the lights on once you plunge in the sub will you? Wouldn’t want to miss the surprise after all.

Outlast

The Outlast games plunges you into full-on horror territory whether you’re a scrappy whistleblower trying to escape the horrors of Mt. Massive Asylum or a journalist stranded amongst the crazed villagers of Temple Gate. In these games, you cannot fight. Your only options are to run, hide, or die.

The games offer a fun horror atmosphere that’s perfect for scaring ourselves silly this rainy season. There’s a good combination of jumpscares, chases and puzzle-solving inside well-detailed environments where your enemies can just appear at a moment’s notice.

The games easily fit into the base model Steam Deck and even Nintendo Switch, so this is definitely an amazing, scary experience you can take on the go no matter what your preferred handheld console is.
