Buy it if…
You like having a powerful yet compact foldable phone
The Galaxy Z Flip5 is definitely one compact smartphone, especially once it’s all closed up. It measures only 85.1 x 71.9 x 15.1 when folded. Despite that, it possesses specs and features that’s just as good as Samsung’s other premium phones. You get a nice, foldable Dynamic AMOLED display at 120Hz and HDR10+ support and a Super AMOLED cover screen for when the phone’s closed.
Likewise, the Galaxy Z Flip5 is powered by the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy, giving it plenty of power for handling the most demanding apps and games. Flex Mode is also available in case you want to use your phone in a half-folded shape like a laptop.
You want convenient access to your apps
And speaking of the cover screen or Flex Window as Samsung calls it, its capabilities have now been expanded. Rather than just using it to look at the time and notifications, you now get even more widgets and apps. From there, you can check the weather, bring up the calendar, respond to text messages, and even read social media notifications.
You like taking plenty of fun photos
Admittedly, the Galaxy Z Flip5’s camera systems aren’t the strongest in the line. But its dual 12 MP main and ultrawide cameras are still very good, especially since the main shooter still comes with OIS and Dual Pixel PDAF to help with photography.
But that aside, the hardware of the phone can make for a very versatile device. Want to take a group photo with your friends? Simply set it down in Flex Mode for an instant tripod and hands-free video. You can hold the phone up camcorder style or even move the preview image to the bottom half for taking pictures from the hip.

Don’t buy it if…
You prefer a standard Android phone
While amazing, not everyone wants a foldable device. If this is you, then the Galaxy S23 line may be the one for you. The base Galaxy S23, while not foldable into a clamshell design, is still a compact phone that packs plenty of power and efficiency even for heavier apps and games. It’s also more affordable than the foldable Galaxy Z Flip5 too, since it doesn’t have as much hardware tech to implement.
You want a bigger, foldable device
On the other hand, you might want your foldable to be bigger in which case, the book-style Galaxy Z Fold5 may be up your alley. The Galaxy Z Fold5 opens up to reveal a bigger display, allowing it to act as a small tablet if needed. It’s also compatible with the S Pen too, though it doesn’t ship with one in the box.
You want longer battery life
Given its compact nature, it’s not surprising that the Galaxy Z Flip5 technically has the smallest battery in the lineup, coming in with only 3,700mAh. While the phone still gets a full day’s use even when we take into account its Always-On Display, you might get even longer with other phones in the line.
If you don’t mind the larger size, then the Galaxy S23 Ultra might be the premium Samsung phone for you. It has very powerful cameras, the same great Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 performance, and a big 5,000mAh battery which should last you much longer.
