A New, Faster iPad Mini Has Just Been Announced!
Compared to the big event that was the iPhone 16 launch, Apple has opted for a simple release with their new iPad Mini. It’s technically a refresh of the 2021 iPad Mini, designed to run faster especially with the latest advancements and features. As such, it features a mix of old and new components alike, resulting in a balanced package.
A Modest Spec Bump
The most major change is the use of the new A17 Pro chip; the same model that powered the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. There’s a slight change however, as it's reported that the chip in this new iPad Mini only contains a 5-core GPU instead of the 6-core GPU in both iPhones.
It could mean less graphical performance in things like games but, most users may not notice it for day-to-day browsing and creative tasks. After all, the tablet form factor does help with cooling a bit better due to having more space.
Apple claims that this allows the new iPad Mini up to 30% faster CPU performance and up to 25% faster GPU performance than its predecessor. Of course, we’ll have to test it ourselves once the new models arrive.
Unsurprisingly, the spec bump is pretty much done in order to facilitate Apple’s new Apple Intelligence features. It needs the sufficient power and efficiency that comes with its new chipset.
Updated Connectivity and Storage
In addition to the modern chip, this 2024 iPad Mini will come with upgraded connectivity features. There’s a faster USB Type-C 3.1 Gen2 port, support for Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.3. Apple also made it compatible with the Apple Pencil Pro stylus.
Additionally, Apple has also bumped up the starting storage for this iPad Mini, starting at 128GB up from 64GB of the 2021 model. It is also possible that the tablet now has 8GB of RAM since it’s the baseline most hardware has targeted when it comes to AI features.

A Familiar Design with New Colors
The rest of the specs should be quite similar to what we already have from 2021, down to the 8.3-inch Liquid Retina IPS display which unfortunately, is still capped at 60Hz. Apple has also retained the same 12MP cameras from the original model. You might get better results though since you now get Smart HDR 4 support.
Battery is the same 19.3Whr cell which Apple claims is good for up to 10 hours of browsing the internet or watching videos over Wi-Fi. And yes, there’s still a charger included in the package.
A new Blue color has been announced for this new iPad Mini lineup, adding to its Purple, Starlight, and Space Gray colorways. It’s not nearly as vibrant as the one used for the new iPhone 16 at least in pictures.
