Galaxy AI Now Confirmed for Older Samsung Smartphones–With a Catch
It’s confirmed. Samsung is rolling out Galaxy AI to even more devices, including the Galaxy S21 series. This makes it the third batch of older devices to receive these features, following the initial rollout to 2023 and 2022’s devices during the past months. There’s a catch however:
Given the differences in chipsets and processing power between these devices, not all of Galaxy AI’s features will be trickling down to the brand’s older releases. That feature appears to be reserved for the flagship Galaxy S24 line for now.
Galaxy AI features and which phone gets them?
Galaxy AI provides a wide range of useful functions such as Circle-to-Search, Live Translate, Generative Edits, and all sorts of AI assistants to help with transcripts, notes, and even browsing, by providing useful summaries for any page you’re looking at.
Those with Samsung devices from last year such as the Galaxy S23 line, the Galaxy Z Fold5 and Galaxy Z Flip5, and even the Tab S9 line, should be getting nearly the full suite of features with their latest updates albeit, with some limitations.
For example, “Instant Slow-Mo” for video is not available for the Galaxy S23 FE and even 2022 phones such as the Galaxy S22 line as well as the older Z Fold4 and Z Flip4. On the other hand, “Live Translate” is only available for the 5G-compatible Galaxy Tab S9.

What about the 2021 Samsung smartphones?
2021 devices such as the Galaxy S21 Ultra, the Z Fold3, and the Z Flip3 will be getting an even more pared down version of the AI suite. These devices are said to only get Circle-to-Search as well as “Magic Rewrite”, something that works similarly to Generative Edit albeit, done on the cloud rather than the device’s weaker internals (at least in terms of AI functions).
Similar to their OS updates, Samsung has already started rolling out these AI features via One UI 6.1 to older devices. Those who’re on S21 devices can expect the update around early May, though it’s possible that this is for Korean users only. Global users may have to wait around the end of the month before they can enjoy the two AI features promised to these devices.
AI features for the 2023 smartphones have already started rolling out last March. As for the 2021 devices, the update is expected around early May, at least for Korean users. A global rollout may take some time still.
It seems S21 users may just have to wait a bit longer. After all, the S21 will still receive major updates until 2024, plus another year of security patches. If you want a Galaxy AI-enabled phone that will last you a while longer though, then it might be time to upgrade to the latest Galaxy S24. It’s up to you.
