Keep Thieves Out of Your Account with Google’s Identity Check!

Back in October, we took a look at some of the latest anti-theft features rolled out to Android phones such as Theft Detection Lock and Remote Lock. Now, we’re getting another addition to its security suite with Google’s latest Identity Check feature, aimed at safeguarding your digital accounts and phone settings in the off-chance your phone is stolen.

Safeguard essential settings with Android 15

With this new Identity Check, you can now designate one or more “trusted locations” such as your home where you can just change up essential account settings. Whenever you’re outside any of these trusted locations, your phone will ask for biometric authentication in order to access these same settings at least for Pixel devices at the start.

These settings include things like your device PIN, your biometrics, and even toggling Find My Device on and off. That way, any thief who’s able to snatch your phone is prevented from just factory resetting your device or looking up other sensitive information, in tandem with the other security features already introduced.

Of course, it’s not completely a foolproof solution. It doesn’t prevent a user from being coerced by somebody into using their biometrics in order to revoke permissions. Also, it does add a layer of inconvenience if you actually do need to change your settings while outside your designated location.
