Quick Review: Nubia RedMagic 7

As mobile games continue to advance and become more demanding on hardware, dedicated gaming phones have really started carving their own niche. 2022’s Nubia RedMagic 7 for instance, is designed to deliver impressive gaming performance at a more midrange price point.

Of course, these phones do come with their own set of quirks and features of their own that you’ll want to keep in mind. To see what this specialized gaming phone has to offer you, check out his quick unboxing:

Buy it if…

You need top-notch gaming performance in a phone

Gaming is definitely the main reason why you’ll choose the RedMagic 7 and it doesn’t disappoint in that regard. The phone’s powered by the flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, which makes for a powerful chipset, especially when played with the phone’s cooling solutions!

With the RedMagic 7, you can run even heavier games such as Genshin Impact at 60 FPS for a long while, even at the highest settings. Additionally, some titles like Call of Duty Mobile can easily reach 90 FPS using this phone, giving you a massive competitive advantage, while still enjoying the impressive visuals on the screen.

You want a big screen for enjoying your movies and games

Of course, having a chipset that can push your mobile games to look and play the best it can be won’t work if the screen isn’t up to scratch. In this case, we’re glad to report that the RedMagic 7’s display is just as good as advertised.

The display is AMOLED, so you get that nice contrast and rich blacks in your images. Its refresh rate is very fast at 165Hz, which helps make day-to-day phone use a total breeze! For gaming and movies, we also like the under-display selfie camera, since it results in a smooth picture without the cutout’s interference.

You enjoy fast-charging on your phone

Of course, no gaming phone will be complete without fast charging and the RedMagic 7 doesn’t disappoint! It ships with a proper 65W charger, easily replenishing the battery up to 99% from 0 in just around 30 minutes!

This should give you enough time to power up the phone after draining it under an intense gaming session.

Don’t buy it if…

You want a phone with good water and dust resistance

It’s no surprise that the RedMagic 7 doesn’t come with built-in resistance against water and heavy dust. It sports a number of exposed vents, cutouts, and visible fans that are designed to help dissipate the heat during intense gaming sessions.

As such, the RedMagic 7 may not be the best choice for you if you’re a very active and outdoor-sy type of person. You might end up damaging the phone’s internals when used in areas near water.

Something like the Samsung Galaxy A34 for instance, is rated IP67, making it a good choice if you think you’ll find yourself submerged in water on your outdoor trips.

You want stronger cameras for the price

While the RedMagic 7 is known for its impressive gaming chops, its camera hardware struggles to compete with some other phones in its price range. As such, it’s not exactly the phone to splurge on when the camera takes priority over gaming for you.

For around the same price, you can get the Samsung Galaxy A54 5G, which sports better camera tech, with its 50 MP main camera having OIS for better stability. Additionally, its Exynos 1380 processor is quite capable in games, even if it’s not to the same extent as RedMagic’s phone.

You prefer a slimmer, lighter phone

While the RedMagic 7 isn’t as big as something like an iPhone 14 Pro Max, it’s still one of the bigger and beefier options around mostly due to the assorted cooling features it packs in its frame.

You may not enjoy having a big phone hanging around in your pocket especially during longer travels. If you don’t mind a slight reduction in processing power, the Nubia RedMagic 6R’s a bit smaller and slimmer, packing in the even older Snapdragon 888 which is still more than enough for most games and apps.
