Samsung’s AI Subscription Plan offers Galaxy Phones and Tablets for Rent
Buying a top-of-the-line Galaxy smartphone feels very expensive doesn’t it? Well, if news from CES 2025 is anything to go by, you may now have a way to try one at a more accessible price. This is where Samsung’s supposed “AI Subscription Club” enters the picture.
Right away, there’s plenty of questions swirling in our heads at this. What kind of hardware can we rent? Where will it be available? We’ve gathered all of the news we know right here:
A New Way to Try Top Shelf Galaxy Devices
Despite the name, this is apparently different from Galaxy AI services, causing some initial confusion. Samsung vice-chair Han Jong-hee clarified that this is more like an installment or rental plan for actual hardware, complete with some level of after-sales service. He compared it to like a monthly plan like Netflix or Spotify, but for hardware.
The AI in the branding could denote that this is for hardware that comes with their in-house Galaxy AI such as the upcoming Galaxy S25 line, tablets like the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra, and Baille; Samsung’s new AI-powered robot companion to be launched within the year.
This isn’t anything new for Samsung. It has started a subscription service for its home appliances in South Korea and got good responses and reviews from locals. In fact, subscriptions reportedly accounted for 30% of all sales at Korean Samsung Stores weeks after its introduction.
People have also compared it to post-paid plans offered by carriers, both here and in the US. Likewise, it also sounded similar to Google’s Pixel Pass, which also offered access to YT Premium and Google Play Pass. However, Google cancelled it back in 2023.
What’s less clear is if you’ll eventually be able to own the device you rented after a set period of time like what typically happens with carriers. We’ll have to wait for more announcements regarding this.
