Sony Reveals the PS5 Pro!

We’ve all seen the rumors before but now, it’s finally confirmed. Sony has just announced the new and improved PS5 Pro, alongside promises of better graphics and performance from its original flagship console. The goal of the new console is to supposedly deliver the best graphics in your top games without compromising on the frame rates, treating gamers to the best of both worlds!

That definitely sounds like a very lofty promise. So how does Sony plan to follow-up on this with its new console? Well, let’s take a close look at all the details revealed by the company here:

No More Fidelity or Performance Modes?

So…what’s so “Pro” about this new gaming console? In a video presentation by Mark Cerny, Lead Architect for the PS5, the primary improvements in the form of the PS5 Pro come from what the company is calling “the Big Three”.

Larger GPU - The PS5 Pro is sporting a much larger GPU with up to 67% more compute units and 28% faster RAM compared to the base model. (Still based on RDNA2 though) As a result, Sony promises up to 45% faster rendering times in most of their games.

Advanced Ray Tracing - As a result of this bigger GPU, Sony claims to have increased the ray-tracing capabilities of their latest consoles, projecting rays at double or triple the speeds of the original PS5.

AI-Driven Upscaling - And finally, there’s now custom hardware to help power Sony’s own AI-powered upscaling tech which they call PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). Basically similar to Nvidia’s DLSS or AMD’s FSR technology; especially important as the PS5 often targets 4K displays.

As a result, the PS5 Pro is hopefully able to deliver the best visual experience at smooth 60FPS frame rates, eliminating the need for the usual ‘Graphics’ modes. Interestingly, the presentation mentioned how players often sprung for Performance modes almost ¾ of the time in most PS5 games, showing just how much a smooth experience truly matters.

No Disc Drive…or Stand

So far, everything sounds pretty exciting. Unfortunately, the PS5 Pro doesn’t come with its own Disc Drive which does suck for those who already have a sizable collection of physical games and are looking to upgrade. You’ll have to buy the separate disc drive Sony already released in order to play them.

Oh, and the vertical stand it’s using in the promos is a separate purchase as well. There’s no word on whether it will come with the default horizontal stand included in the original PS5 or the small “legs” included in the PS5 Slim. Although the console should stand just fine even without those.

PS5 Pro Game Boost for Existing Titles

In line with the graphical and performance uplift, Sony plans to roll out free software updates to several games in its library. These games would then come with the “PS5 Pro Enhanced” label in order to inform gamers if the titles are all set to make use of the PS5 Pro’s much more powerful hardware. No need to re-buy the same games again.

According to Sony’s official blog, the company has already reached out to different game developers and publishers, promising improvements in titles like Alan Wake 2, Demon’s Souls, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Horizon Forbidden West, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, and many more that’s on the way.

Additionally, their PS5 Pro Game Boost was also announced to apply to more than 8,500 backward compatible PS4 games on the PS5 Pro. Enhanced Image Quality will also be implemented, boosting the resolution of these titles in order to appear crisper on your screen!

Accessories and Compatibility

Additionally, Sony’s also confirmed that the PS5 Pro will be compatible with all the accessories and gadgets already released for the original PS5. These include the PlayStation VR2, the PlayStation Portal, its DualSense Edge controllers, and even the Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore headsets. So don’t worry. You don’t have to buy “Pro” versions of these accessories for it.

The PS5 Pro starts at a higher $799 price (approx. PHP 39K) and will be available for pre-orders directly from PlayStation first. Make sure to follow us for more updates on when we can get this new console here in store for a much better price.
