Sony Unveils Playstation Portal, Pulse Elite, and Pulse Explore

Sony finally unveils the Playstation Portal; the brand’s first Remote Play dedicated device set to launch later this year. Initially announced in May as “Project Q”, the Playstation Portal aims to bring the experience of using their next-gen console in the palm of your hands, taking it wherever you want to go.

Bringing in “most” of the PS5 in your hands

Unlike other portable devices like the Steam Deck or the Nintendo Switch, the Playstation Portal is purely a streaming handheld. It has no functionality when not connected to a PS5 and requires a Wi-Fi connection in order to run.

Instead, it streams the games right from your console and you don’t even have to be in the same room or the same local network so long as both devices are connected to a strong Wi-Fi connection. The Portal can even wake your own PS5 just by turning it on.

The Playstation Portal features an 8-inch LCD screen running at 1080p and at 60FPS for streaming your games. It does keep the same controls as the PS5’s DualSense Controller, which means you get all of the same features such as haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and its touchpad which is now integrated in the screen.

Playstation Link

Of course, streaming your PS5 games isn’t an entirely new concept. Sony’s Remote Play capabilities already allow you to stream games from your console on your phone, tablet, or computer. However, the Playstation Portal is looking to turn this up to 11 via the new Playstation Link feature.

Playstation Link is a new proprietary standard that Sony designed for their Playstation devices. It’s meant to deliver low latency and lossless audio, which will be essential if they plan on making the Portal a success, especially since the device doesn’t have Bluetooth. There is a 3.5mm headphone jack though, so you can use your wired headphones with no problems.

This new standard should also work well with the other products announced in the lineup:

Pulse Elite Wireless Headset & Pulse Explore Wireless Earphones

The new Pulse Elite Wireless Headset

In addition to the Playstation Portal, Sony has also announced two new audio devices that you can use with your devices. The Pulse Elite is a wireless headset offering lossless audio, AI-enhanced noise rejection for filtering background sounds, and a retractable boom mic.

The Pulse Explore wireless earbuds

On the other hand, the Pulse Explore is the brand’s first set of true wireless earbuds, aiming to deliver the same, premium portable experience as the bigger Elite.

Both audio devices will be using Sony’s custom-designed planar magnetic drivers, which the brand says should be capable of delivering audiophile-level listening on the consumer end. Both devices are designed to improve the gameplay experience either on your PS5 or on the upcoming Playstation Portal.

Playstation Portal Price

The Playstation Portal is expected to cost USD 199.99 (approximately PHP11,365), and is rumored to launch this coming November. The Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore are expected to cost USD 149.99 (approximately PHP 8,523) and USD 199.99 respectively.
