Bigger Discounts for Best Selling Smartphones - Q3 2024
Time to place your bets!
According to Counterpoint’s market research, the best selling smartphone for Q3 this year was…the vanilla Apple iPhone 15! Though it may not come with the fancy zoom capabilities, shiny new titanium frames, or even their much touted Apple Intelligence features, this compact model did come with sufficient enhancements of its own to win the top spot!
Last Year’s iPhone 15 Lineup Wins the Top 3!
Released in September 2023, the iPhone 15 comes with a new 48MP main camera as well as the Dynamic Island feature that originally only came with the 14 Pro lineup. The phone has also switched to USB-C in compliance with EU regulations as well as a textured matte back panel which we found helps a lot with a steady grip.
That’s not to say the Pro models were completely overshadowed. The iPhone 15 Pro Max takes the second spot in the list while the smaller iPhone 15 Pro comes in at 3rd. In a way, it’s similar to the firm’s last year findings where equivalent models from the iPhone 14 line took similar spots in the list.
And like last year, the non-Pro, Plus model seems to have gotten the short end of the stick as it didn’t even make it to the top 10 in the list. A little unfortunate, since it is definitely a good phone in its own right as well. (And one which you can find at a great price here.)

Samsung Maintains its Presence with Galaxy A-Series
While Apple’s previous generation devices occupy the top spots in the ranking, Samsung manages to occupy more slots in the top 10 overall. It is led by the surprisingly popular Galaxy A-series lineup.
Sitting at 4th place is the Galaxy A15 4G, with its 5G variant taking the next spot. At 6th place is the Galaxy A35 5G followed by the budget Galaxy A05. These midrange contenders have definitely maintained immense popularity, owing to their great pricing and well-rounded list of features and capabilities.
The flagship Galaxy S24 did crack the list though, coming in at 10th place. It’s the only S-series smartphone to be able to do so. It comes after the iPhone 14 at eight place and the Redmi 13C 4G at ninth place.
Counterpoint theorizes that Apple and Samsung’s addition of Generative AI was a major driving force for them to dominate the rankings. Which is interesting as Apple Intelligence isn’t coming to the base iPhone 15. Likewise, Galaxy AI isn’t available at any of the A-series phones at the top of the list barring the Galaxy A35.
If anything, this probably best illustrates how generative AI isn’t a major factor for people’s smartphone purchasing decisions.
