The iPhone SE 4: Return of the Notch?
And the new smartphones just keep on coming.
At least this one should be quite exciting for anyone looking to switch to a more recent iPhone without costing an arm and a leg. The SE lineup is apparently returning in the form of a rumored iPhone SE 4, bringing the latest flagship features to a much more accessible price point as well as a few compromises in key areas.
As usual, how much of these compromises will affect you, will depend on your use case. For now, let’s take a look at all the leaked details regarding the iPhone SE 4 so you can plan accordingly.
iPhone SE 4: Notch or no?
Let’s start with the display. Based on leaked photos posted by X (formerly known as Twitter) user “Majin Bu”, the iPhone SE 4 will draw heavy inspiration from the base iPhone 16 and a bit of the iPhone 14 in its overall design. It’s slated to come with a 6.1-inch display, no Touch ID, but this time, it’s OLED, giving prospective buyers a big bump in overall visuals.
The catch is of course, the refresh rate. Given that this is technically a much lower tier than the non-Pro iPhone variants, all leaks point to the iPhone SE 4 capping out at just 60Hz refresh rates.
As for whether the iPhone SE 4 will return with the dreaded notch well, that one isn’t too clear. There’s plenty of conflicting reports with some industry watchers noting that it may adopt the Dynamic Island instead, like the flagship models. Hell, it might even have both. We’ll just have to wait and see for this one.
Other feature highlights
As far as the iPhone 14 inspirations though, it mostly revolves around the frame of the iPhone SE 4. Compared to the rounder frame and tapered back of the iPhone 16, the SE 4’s leaks appear to feature much sharper, similar to the much older model.
Performance should be pretty good as all leaks point to the iPhone SE 4 using the same A18 chip found in the iPhone 16. Apple Intelligence should be fair game as well, with the leaked 8GB RAM but, we expect these to be quite limited.
Cameras are also one aspect where the SE makes its compromises and based on the initial leaks, the SE 4 won’t be breaking this tradition. There’s only a single camera on the back of the phone based on the leaks, mentioned to be a single 48MP shooter with OIS. And of course, there’s the front camera which sits at 12MP.
The battery will supposedly get some upgrades. All the previous SE iPhones all came in much smaller sizes and smaller batteries but the iPhone SE 4 being the size of the 16 might mean it has a similar cell to that phone, leading to really good battery life.
And yes, the iPhone SE 4 will be shipping with USB-C connectivity rather than the Lightning port found in older SE models. In compliance with the EU regulations of course.

iPhone SE 4: Possible release date
Like the Notch-vs-Dynamic Island thing, there’s no official release date announced for this model. If it follows the old SE releases however, we might still be looking at a late March or early April release date, at least in the US.
This is definitely one phone we’ll be keeping an eye out for this year. It’s not every day we get an SE model and based on our experience, there’s definitely an audience for this kind of iPhone. It’s a great entry point for anyone looking to make the switch to Apple’s walled garden.
