Xiaomi Among First Android Brands to Debut the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4

Xiaomi once again blitzes past its rivals to be one of the first brands to debut Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 4; the upcoming high-end Android processor. The new Snapdragon will first launch in the Xiaomi 15 line sometime in October, according to leaks. This will then be followed by OnePlus and IQOO, with the OnePlus 13 and IQOO 13 respectively.

If you’ve been following along for a while then this isn’t too unusual as Xiaomi was also among the first to launch a phone with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Still, Gen 4 is shaping up to be a major departure from the company’s previous attempts, with things like a new CPU and possibly, big improvements in terms of performance. Here’s everything we know about it so far:

New CPU; higher power consumption

Smartphone chipsets have been on an upward trajectory in terms of power and efficiency for a while now and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 appears to continue in the same direction. According to Qualcomm Chief Marketing Officer Don McGuire, the 8 Gen 4 will be using their Oryon CPU, similar to the Snapdragon X Elite; a big departure from its previous Arm-based ones.

And while we don’t have a concrete idea of its chipset composition just yet, rumors circulating on Weibo point at a full performance core setup with no efficiency cores, kind of like MediaTek’s Dimensity 9300, which is found in Tecno’s Phantom V2 Fold.

If this information is true, then we can expect some serious battery drain for extended heavy tasks. Manufacturers could compensate by including bigger batteries in the phones, kind of like the OnePlus 12 with its 5,500mAh cell, but here’s to hoping that the more efficient 3nm process offsets some of the drain.

For the Xiaomi 15 in particular, we’re quite optimistic that we’ll get a sufficiently fast charger in the box anyway, as well as compatibility with Xiaomi’s Wireless Charging Stand for some passive charging when not in use.

Big performance improvements in apps and games

On the upside though, this should mean a big improvement in both single and multi-core performance, with initial tests supposedly reaching up to 4.0 GHz. For reference, the still impressive Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 reaches up to 3.3 GHz on its big core. The boost should make this perfect for playing the heaviest mobile games at high settings and frame rates.

But, we should take all of this with a grain of salt as it will still depend on how each manufacturer/developer optimizes for this chip. We’ll also have to account for things like cooling to see if we can actually sustain these high boost blocks over long periods of time. Nonetheless, it is an exciting thing to observe once the first few phones are released.

In the meantime though, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 currently reigns supreme as far as smartphone chips go and it can be found in the flagship Xiaomi 14! Check it out at a great price here at your most trusted online gadget store!
