Apple Announces New iMac and Mac Mini powered by M4!
Apple ushers in a new era of their desktops with the new M4 iMac and Mac Mini official announcement. Promising to deliver big performance gains by skipping the M3, these new devices are also built with the company’s Apple Intelligence features in mind, leading to other uplifts across the board.
For now though, let’s take a look at all the physical changes to be found in these new Apple computers here:
Apple’s Mac Mini: Mini yet Mighty with M4!
Measuring at just 5 x 5 inches, this new Mac Mini is even smaller than the previous model, taking up less space on your desk. There’s no compromises when it comes to performance and thermals either. Vents are located at the foot of the computer and there’s a new cooling architecture that helps guide air to different parts of the system to keep it cool as a whole.
You get two options for this new Mac Mini, depending on how much power you need. The basic M4 chip comes with a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU. On the other hand, the stronger M4 Pro has up to 14-cores on the CPU (10-Performance + 4-Efficiency Cores) and up to 20 cores on the GPU. Both chips bring hardware-accelerated ray tracing and now start with 16GB of unified memory.
There’s two USB-C (USB 3) ports in the front as well as an audio jack for your headphones. On the back, there’s three Thunderbolt 4 ports (Thunderbolt 5 for the M4 Pro). There’s the standard Gigabit Ethernet port, and an HDMI port for easy connection to a TV or HDMI display.
As far as Apple Intelligence features are concerned, Image Playground and Genmoji are confirmed, allowing users to generate their own original images. By December, Apple also plans to integrate ChatGPT into their own AI Writing Tools so users won’t have to switch between apps. All of this should be processed on-device, which Apple claims helps protect their user’s privacy.

M4 iMac: Same Shape, Better Performance
Apple also announced a new iMac lineup previously, now with the new M4 chip as well. Users will find a familiar design with the same 24” 4.5K Retina display as before. But now, customers can get the display with nano-texture glass, greatly reducing glare.
The addition of the M4 chip also helps expand connectivity at least for the premium model. It now comes with four Thunderbolt 4 ports with Ethernet support as well as output two 6K 60Hz external displays or one 8K 120Hz external display. Sadly, the base model only gets two Thunderbolt 4 ports, no Ethernet support, and support for only one 6K 60Hz external display.
Likewise, Apple’s also releasing an updated Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, and the optional Magic Trackpad to pair with these new devices. All of them now have USB-C connectivity, as per the EU’s recent changes. The Type-C Magic Mouse still keeps its charging port at the bottom however, which means you still can’t use it while it’s plugged in.
Still, these accessories are color-coordinated with the new iMacs, whose options now consist of slightly tweaked versions of the previous color. There’s the usual silver, blue, purple, pink, green, yellow, and orange.
According to Apple’s official post, the M4 delivers up to 1.5x faster browsing performance compared to the M1 iMac, or 6x faster when compared to the latest Intel-based iMac model. The M4 also has almost double the memory bandwidth of the M1, with 120GB/s compared to the M1’s 66.67GB/s. Users can definitely expect faster read and write speeds for large files once it hits Philippine market shelves sometime in November.
If this all lives up to the performance claims this might just be the best desktop package to get for anyone holding out for their iMac upgrade.
