First Look at the Nintendo Switch 2!
I guess the cat’s out of the bag for this one.
As we’ve already been subjected to a flurry of leaked images from random users and even accessory-makers, Nintendo has finally dropped the first look at its new Nintendo Switch 2 console last night. Complete with a short demo of a new Mario Kart game to boot, possibly an upcoming Mario Kart 9.
And it’s looking quite exciting so far, as expected from the successor of the popular Switch and Switch OLED consoles:
A Bigger Nintendo Switch!

Right out of the gate, the biggest change with the Nintendo Switch 2 is size. It’s much bigger than the original, with a visibly taller and wider display speculated to come at around 8.4 inches. And with the thin bezels around this display, we’re certain you’ll be able to see more of your playing space when in handheld mode.
We’ll get to the Joy-Cons later. For now, the main body’s button layout appears to be similar based on the trailer. Power and volume buttons are on the top left side. Cooling vents are in the center of the console. There’s a headphone jack on the top right, the slot for the game’s cartridge, and…a USB-C port?
Yep. The Switch 2 appears to come with two USB-C ports this time; one at the top and one at the bottom. This should now make it easier if you plan to use the charger and some kind of USB-C accessory at the same time, or to attach something else while the Switch is docked.
The kickstand is still there, now redesigned into a U-shape that’s capable of supporting a much wider variety of angles compared to the Switch or even the Switch OLED kickstand.
New Joy-Cons!

Now we come to the Joy-Cons and is the trailer implying that they can be used to move things like a computer mouse? Initial leaks certainly pointed out this functionality but we’ll have to wait and see how this plays out.
These newer, bigger Joy-Cons also appear to ditch the old rail connections in favor of a magnetic snap on system. Probably more user-friendly but we have to admit, it is kind of worrying how well it’s going to hold up.
There’s a new unmarked square button on the bottom of the right Joy-Con, beneath the Home Button. Leaks suggested it to be a new “C” button but we’ll have to wait for more details to see what this can be used for.
No official word on what kind of sticks the new Joycons are using though. Could be helpful in determining whether or not the dreaded stick drift will continue to be a problem for this new console release.

Backwards Compatibility Confirmed

With the original Nintendo Switch being home to a lot of amazing first-party titles and ports, backwards compatibility has been one of the most requested features for its successor. And now, it’s officially confirmed that the Nintendo Switch 2 will be backwards compatible with the older Switch titles in addition to its own Switch 2 exclusive games.
There’s a little caveat. The trailer did mention that a few Nintendo Switch games may not be supported or even be fully compatible with their successor. They didn’t elaborate which games these would be however.
Personally, we think it’s probably games like Ring Fit Adventure or LABO. These use add-ons geared towards the original Switch components and will most likely not fit the much bigger Nintendo Switch 2.
What Wasn’t Revealed:

Of course, the trailer didn’t say anything regarding specs, official launch dates, or even pricing for their new console. Nintendo has announced plans for a Switch 2 Direct on April 2, 2025 where we’ll probably find out more details regarding this console.
Additionally, Nintendo will be holding a number of hand-on events across the world where prospects can try out the Switch 2 in the run up to June.
