iOS 18 update is now available for your iPhone!

Apple’s iOS 18 update is now available, bringing in even more customization options and enhancements across various applications on your iPhone! The new update covers everything from simple redesigns, better customization options, and even new accessibility features that makes it all the more easier to switch and use an iPhone!

Which phones are eligible for the update?

Before we get all excited though, it’s probably best to check whether your phone is eligible for the new iOS version. Fortunately, it’s still a rather extensive list and most people who’ve bought an iPhone in the past few years should be able to update to the latest version. But anyway, the full list includes:

• The rest of the iPhone 16 lineup

• The iPhone 15 lineup, including the Pro and Pro Max

• The iPhone 14 lineup, including the Pro and Pro Max

• The iPhone 13 lineup, including the Pro, Pro Max, and Mini

• The iPhone 12 lineup, including the Pro, Pro Max, and Mini

• The iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and the 11 Pro Max

• The iPhone Xr, Xs, and Xs Max

• Both the iPhone SE (2nd generation) and iPhone SE (3rd generation)

It’s quite an extensive list as you can see so chances are, you should be able to get the latest redesign and promised features, for iOS 18 anyway. With that out of the way, what can we expect from the latest OS?

A Redesigned Photos App!

For starters, Apple is bringing a big update to its Photos app; all designed to make it easier for you to reminisce and look for any photo you’ve taken. Apple emphasizes its more simplified layout, as well as various Intelligence features that can help sort your photos based on events or subjects; no need to manually sort them into Albums yourself. (You can still do so if you want of course)

Added Flavor for Messages and Phone Apps

Additionally, Apple’s also bringing all sorts of flavorful changes to the iPhone’s Messages and well, Phone apps. You get new formatting options when sending a message, including underline and strikethrough and of course, text effects like emojis and sticker Tapbacks.

As for the Phone app, it will now come with the ability to record and transcribe live calls as you go, which is helpful for when you want to recall specific details later on. Of course, users will be informed that the phone is listening and recording the conversation. You can find the transcript on the Notes app.

What’s even better is the expanded Messages via satellite in case cellular and Wi-Fi connections aren’t available. And yes, they also have support for RCS, allowing for a richer messaging experience between an iPhone user and a non-iPhone user.

New Accessibility Features

Additionally, there’s other features added to help expand accessibility for other users. Eye-Tracking is a built-in option that allows users to navigate their phone with just their eyes. Or likewise, there’s Vocal Shortcuts, which allow your phone to perform tasks by listening to custom sounds you set for the phone.

Music Haptics is designed for deaf users or anyone with compromised hearing, allowing them to experience music via the phone’s ‘Taptic Engine’.

For those who feel nauseous when commuting or riding, there’s Vehicle Motion Cues which should help stabilize the display, making it more comfortable to use while inside a moving car as a passenger.

Apple Intelligence to Come with iOS 18.1

So is it time for…no, unfortunately, it’s not.

Anyone interested in trying out the advertised Apple Intelligence features will have to wait a bit longer as these would be gradually rolled out over the next patches. However, Apple has confirmed that the first batch of features is already planned to release next month with iOS 18.1.

Among the first batch of features coming with iOS 18.1 is the new ‘Clean Up’ tool, which is basically Pixel’s Magic Eraser but for iPhones, allowing you to easily remove unwanted elements from your photos. ‘Memories’ on the other hand, helps you create short movies based on the photos you took by simply typing a description. And of course, there’s assorted writing tools that can help you rewrite, proofread, and summarize longer texts.

For most enthusiasts though, the promised improved Siri could be handy as Apple teased that this model should be able to handle requests a lot more naturally. It’ll be able to complete your request even as you stumble on your speech for instance. Apple also promises better integration with the phone’s settings and it should be useful in helping new iPhone users navigate parts of the phone that’s unfamiliar to them.
