No iOS 18 Needed; New AirPods Pro 2 Update Adds All the Latest Features!

Apple initially showed off a bunch of new features coming to their AirPods during the iPhone 16 announcement. And while it initially seemed like these would all launch with the release of that new lineup as well as iOS 18, the company has already rolled out the latest update for their AirPods Pro 2.

As such, you should be able to immediately enjoy these new features as soon as you use your buds again after the update finishes. But what exactly do these new updates unlock? A couple of things actually:

Head Gestures for Siri

Once the update finishes, you should be able to interact with your Siri announcements and updates with just your head. And like the demo shown during the event, you simply nod your head to accept incoming calls or notifications or shake it if you wish to reject it.

This seems to be a very convenient addition, allowing you to be discrete when responding to calls like if you’re on a train for example. And yes, this does work even with incoming messages and Siri notifications.

Voice Isolation and Spatial Audio

That’s not all that’s coming in the new update of course. The previously teased Voice Isolation and Spatial Audio support are also coming with the latest update. As demonstrated, Voice Isolation can help improve calls in noisy environments by toning down the sound of wind and other background noise in order to keep voices clear.

On the other hand, Personalized Spatial Audio is now expanded to include video games, leading to a more immersive experience. Of course, this would also depend on game developers making use of the feature but it’s a start!

How do I know if I have the update?

Once the update completes, your new firmware version number should be 7A294. Simply go into your phone’s settings, and tapping on the name of your AirPods. It should be visible on the ‘About’ section of the display. (For reference, the previous version is 6F8)
