Pokémon Go is Ending Support for Older Android Smartphones
More obsolescence stuff, this time on the gaming side.
Niantic’s hit AR game Pokémon Go has just announced that it’s going to be ending support for some older Android smartphones in an upcoming update. Support will reportedly end in phases, starting March 2025, starting with versions downloaded from Samsung’s Galaxy Store.
Those who downloaded it from the Google Play Store will end in June 2025.
Goodbye 32-bit Android
Fortunately, by older smartphones, Niantic meant devices running on 32-bit Android systems. Chances are, the Android smartphone you’re already using is on 64-bit Android, especially if you’ve bought them in say, the last five years or so.
For reference, here are some examples of popular 32-bit Android devices, according to Niantic’s website:
• Samsung Galaxy S4, S5, Note 3, and J3
• LG Fortune; Tribute
• Sony Xperia Z2 and Z3
• ZTE Overture 3
• OnePlus One
• Motorola Moto G (1st Generation)
• HTC One (M8)
As a general reference, a lot of these phones were released before 2015. If you’re still worried though, there’s a quick way you can check if your phone will be affected.
How to Check which Version I’m Running?
Simply open up your Pokémon Go app and tap the Pokeball icon. Go to the Settings page and scroll down to the bottom of the page where it says the version number. The last two numbers in the string should indicate what type of version you’re running. If it ends in -64 then, you should be all good to go!
