Steam Deck OLED: Now with HDR and better battery life!
Time for a refresh! Valve has just announced their new Steam Deck OLED, packing in a brighter screen as well as HDR support for a big boost in the visual experience. Additionally, Valve also promises a bigger 50Wh battery that should net around 3-12 hours of gameplay; approximately 30% to 50% more than the old LCD model.
Steam Deck OLED: Specs
Aside from the different display type, the Steam Deck OLED also comes with a slightly bigger display, coming in at 7.4-inches diagonal and packing in a 1280 x 800 resolution. Compared to Nintendo’s own refresh with the Switch OLED though,
There’s also a more efficient die-shrink inside this OLED handheld as it uses the new 6nm AMD “Sephiroth” APU compared to the 7nm “Aerith” APU from the original model. Nonetheless, Valve clarifies that this isn’t the “faster” Steam Deck just yet. All of these changes are geared towards improving efficiency and power savings, especially since they still use the same resolution.
Valve did fit in a larger heatsink and fan inside this new model thanks to the use of a thinner display, so this new Steam Deck should run a lot cooler as well. They’ve also updated memory to 6400 MT/s for improved latency and power management.
Ultimately, despite saying that this isn’t the “faster” Steam Deck model just yet, early tests did show some games being able to hit 80 to 90 FPS in order to make better use of the screen’s enhanced 90Hz refresh rate, all up from the 60Hz maximum of the original Steam Deck.
